    • The Hidden Gulag (report from Committee for Human Rights in North Korea). Very informative and includes maps, testimonies (one from a guard in the camps), and diagrams.

Eight years ago today on January 2, 2005, Shin Dong-hyuk climbed through the electrified fence (which had moments before killed his only friend) of Camp 14, a North Korean concentration camp where he had been held as prisoner (since birth) for 23 years, and began his long journey to freedom.

Despite having all the odds stacked against him, Mr. Shin was nevertheless able to make it out of North Korea and into China.  After finally making his way to Shanghai he met a journalist who realized the importance of his story, and helped him sneak past Chinese guards into a South Korean consulate.

After more than two decades of living (in his own words), “as an animal,” he was finally able to start his transition to life “as a human,” which he states is an ongoing process.

Upon attaining asylum with South Korea, he also became the only known person born into a North Korean prison camp to have escaped and survived to tell the tale.

Two months ago I had the honor of meeting Mr. Shin in person at a speaking engagement, and from now on one of my goals in life is to share his story, as well as the issue of North Korean human rights, with as many people as possible.

Please take the time to look further into his story by checking out his Facebook page, and picking up his book, Escape from Camp 14.

There is also a master list of resources compiled by Tumblr user gedenkenbrauchtwissen relating to Mr. Shin, North Korea, human rights, and much much more.  She has also painstakingly compiled and sourced an interactive map of Camp 14 via Google Earth.

More information regarding the many other camps, along with satellite photography and detailed analysis can be found at FreeKorea.us.

Most recently there was a 60 Minutes segment by Anderson Cooper regarding Camp 14 and the life of Mr. Shin.

  6. Everything changes

The blog is changing. I don’t always have time to keep up with my photography interests, so I’m supplementing my Tumblr with links to videos, posts, essays, articles, quotes—anything I find of interest. I may even post some personal texts from time to time. This is my space, so I want it to be more than just a place where I post photos. THANK YOU to all of my followers, and happy Tumbling!

  8. This novel is now on my ever lengthening “to read” list. I think it presents a different perspective than most of the Holocaust literature I’ve read.

I was captured when I was about 12 years old, in 2001. There was fighting in my village, Wakabil, and I was taken by the raiders.

  10. Taking a short break from grading papers, I used my iPad to snap a shot of the view from my desk. On the far wall hangs a painting of Juliet’s suicide scene in Act V. Two of my students painted it for me when they were freshmen; they absolutely insisted that it was high art richly deserving of a spot on the wall where others would see it and seethe with artistic envy. What the majority of people enjoy most about the painting is Romeo’s striking albeit unintentional resemblance to Jackie Chan. Those two students are seniors now, and they really wish I’d take that painting down. Alas, I refuse.

  11. I decided to do something totally different for the blog today. Since I missed work to have a CT Scan, I chose to create a photo journal of sorts with snapshots taken on my cell phone throughout the day. The only thing I regret is not taking a picture of the CT Scan, itself. I think the med staff would have been willing if only I’d have said something, but I didn’t, and now it’s a lost opportunity. Oh, well. Glad to know somebody loves Jesse, anyway—at least till the rain starts pouring down. Then again, ain’t that just the way love goes?

  12. No posts for a bit?

I’m busy with school. I’ll post if I can, but it’ll probably be sporadic. Hope everyone’s having a great day!
